The police have issued warnings against people travelling as the ‘Beast from the East’ looks set to reach its worst phase this afternoon.

Kingsbridge Police have urged drivers not to travel unless they are in a 4x4. They claim the two wheeled drive vehicles are “causing chaos”. “Most roads are now impassable” added Kingsbridge Police.

Earlier this morning they urged people not to drive unless it’s absolutely essential because “too many vehicles are having to be abandoned on the side of the road”.

The police are on call 24/7 but they are pleading for people to not put more lives at risk if journeys and risks can be avoided.

Looking forwards, the police said the Red weather alert means heavy snow and blizzard conditions are expected to come in with some areas expected to see a significant build up due to freezing rain from later on during Thursday evening.

South Hams District Council have reminded us not to forget those who might be isolated during these severe weather conditions. The council are encouraging residents who might know someone in the community who isn’t receiving the messages from the council or feeling isolated, to “pop round and see them”.

“Even stopping by for a quick cuppa can make a great deal of difference” added the council.

Devon and Cornwall police have echoed these warnings, “urging people to stay off the roads in Devon” and to follow advice from Highways England.

Highways England tweeted: “We are encouraging people not to travel in the South West between 8pm today and 2am tomorrow.

“We are working around the clock to keep everyone safe on the network but in line with the Met Office Red Alert and for safety reasons, the advice is not to travel.”
