Where will it all end? Following the scar inflicted on beautiful Burgh Island with the installation of all those solar panels, which are clearly visible from many parts of Bigbury-on-Sea, we are aghast at the owner’s latest proposal. Is there going to be a war, or what?

There was one last time a concrete bunker was built on the island in 1940. Mr Orchard apparently now wants to build a much bigger one overlooking the magical beauty of the famous Mermaid Pool.

He calls it a ‘new, standalone suite… to provide the hotel with additional accommodation’. According to the application, it seems to be nowhere near the hotel and would be viewed as another carbuncle by those who have walked and loved the island over so many years.
