I was interested to read about Anne Fowler’s refuse bin stowaway last week, Gazette, September 23.

I understand, though, that eating too many slugs is not always good for hedgehogs, so I have been putting out hedgehog food in my garden for the past two years and have been rewarded by nightly visits from these delightful creatures just outside my back door.

I buy proprietary hedgehog food from the local pet shop and add a few peanuts to the mix. They also seem to love dried banana chips and mealworms. It is also important to put out plenty of water, as they are quite thirsty animals.

Given the threatened status of hedgehogs, it would be great if more people could feed them and hopefully halt their decline. It is easy to do and gives so much pleasure.
