A local primary’s annual beach day was made even more exciting when a mysterious musical stranger dropped in with his didgeridoo.

Children at Holbeton Primary School enjoyed fine weather for their day at Mothecombe, where they were joined by youngsters from Holbeton Preschool. The preschool visits Mothecombe every Monday for its Beach School.

Youngsters took part in a scavenger hunt, explored rock pools, built sand sculptures and made pebble people, before taking on a STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths - learning challenge. Looking at water control, teams had to dig a hole and try to keep it filled with water, or compete with another team to divert the stream and build a dam. A third challenge of building and measuring a pebble tower proved harder than it sounded.

Afterwards the children burned off some energy with Aussie rules football and an obstacle course.

Meanwhile, adventurous three and four year olds from the preschool were rock climbing, rock pooling and occasionally jumping on the older childrens’ sand castles, which the primary school pupils took with impressively good grace.

The highlight of the day was when a mysterious stranger who was walking the coast path offered to play his didgeridoo for the children. The group never discovered why he should be carrying his instrument with him, but the children were impressed by his performance, and sang along to The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
