Green-fingered pupils at Modbury Primary School have been enjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of their labour from the school's new kitchen garden.
The kitchen garden received support from a National Lottery grant and Modbury Parish Council, and was built by parents and teachers.
Each class has half a bed in the garden, and the pupils take it in turn to water the plants at lunchtime.
Some of the produce already successfully grown includes potatoes, courgettes and sweetcorn, with children cooking some of the vegetables, with some it even making it into school dinners.
Katherine Pemberton, year 5 class teacher said: “The idea for the project came from our gardening club. We’d like to thank Cllr Daniel Turner from Modbury Parish Council for his support; Charlotte Rathbone, a landscape architect who helped us design the garden; the PTA who have been really supportive; and Tess Stuber who helped with the Lottery funding application.”
Mrs Tess Coulthard, head of school said: “Every child in the school has been in the garden and planted something, and most children have eaten some of the produce. The foundation stage class ate all the peas!
“The idea is for the food to either go to individual classes or the school kitchen. The important thing is the children learn about the whole process of where our food comes from and how it is grown.”
There are many ideas for how the garden will be used next year, which include growing dyes for art classes.
