Surprise, surprise, Devon is riddled with potholes. No money for this, no money for that… in fact, no money for anything.

Funny this, as we are allegedly the fourth-wealthiest nation on the planet. So where has all this money gone?

Could it be the £12bn we are giving to other countries instead of looking after ourselves?

Or could it be the £19bn we contribute to the EU each year? Or maybe the millions looking after and deterring legal or illegal immigrants?

I often wonder why they are so desperate to come here, what with all the potholes and lovely weather; or could it be all the handouts? Surely not!

And then there are the millions in lost tax floating about in tax havens.

Still, at least the prime minister is going to sort that out, having had first-hand experience in such matters. Not to mention the £9m spent on propaganda leaflets coming through a letterbox near you any day.

So how on earth is there going to be any money left for ‘luxuries’ such as healthcare for the disabled or the underprivileged?

I digress back to the potholes. Two reasons for them are a lack of maintenance – I mean, a shovel of tarmac and a hammer are hardly sufficient – and the volume of traffic. Where is it all going? Probably to all those thousands of new homes being built on every square inch of Devon. I wonder where they are going to work?

Anyway, who can remember Kingsbridge, that old, quaint, little market town?

The other day I stopped at Bowcombe Bridge to allow a lorry to cross, it being followed by 22 vehicles, and then I found I was in a queue of 11 cars behind a bus, and it’s not even summer.

And as for the bright sparks suggesting toll roads, I know just the potholes they’ll fit in.

Pass me another blood-pressure tablet.
