The funeral of dedicated Royal British Legion volunteer, Paul Kingsbury was held at St John’s Church in Ivybridge last week.
Paul, a loving son to Pam Harrison, and brother to Debbie and Martin, passed away suddenly after a short illness. The service on Thursday, June 8 was well attended by over sixty friends and family, and was led by The Royal British Legion’s Padre Ken Bromwich. Tributes were given by branch president David Davis, as well as Paul’s brother Martin, who gave a moving and humorous account of Paul’s life, including their childhood growing up in Southampton.
Spokesman for the Ivybridge branch of the Royal British Legion Major George Vosper said: “Paul was an avid Southampton FC fan and guests were invited to wear club colours red and white while the service began and ended with the Club Anthem "When the Saints go marching In" with many of the congregation singing along as Paul’s coffin was carried out of the church.”
Paul, like many Royal British Legion volunteers had no military background, and was described by Major Vosper as “a huge asset to the branch.” Paul’s mother Pam Harrison, and his late step father George, were also both very involved with the Poppy Appeal.
Major Vosper added: “Paul was a constant presence throughout the three week collection period standing outside the Co-op and in Fore Street in all weathers, collecting tin in hand, sometimes wet and cold but always cheerful and never complaining. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is £13000 better off thanks to Paul’s devoted service.”
Paul’s legacy will have had a direct benefit in helping many local veterans who have fallen on hard times. Major Vosper continued: “The Royal British Legion would not survive if it were not for good people like him. He will be a hard act to follow and will be greatly missed”.
