We now know the merger of South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council is not going ahead but our council tax has risen considerably, although we believe we are not paying the increase that was to be imposed if the two councils joined forces.
As the Government Rate Support Grant is being considerably reduced, it makes the council more accountable to us as its main means of raising revenue.
It also makes the council more accountable to us for the manner in which our tax monies are spent.
The suggestion to punish those who shop in town with higher car park charges will inevitably send people to out of town centres, with a reduction in parking income and also increase online shopping.
The income from parking does not rise just because of higher charge and it will definitely not help town shopkeepers.
A suggestion of bins being emptied every six weeks instead of the current two will lead to more flytipping, plus health and safety problems in the warmer months.
