With reference to the article regarding the merger with “troubled” West Devon Borough Council, August 11, can I urge South Hams District Council that if it does not intend to offer the electors a referendum on the subject, then please do not waste our money on a consultation.
A consultation now appears to be a ploy where a decision has already been made but the ”small people” can make comments that will not change the outcome whatsoever.
What happened regarding the consultation over our hospitals? It changed the outcome not one iota.
Perhaps Dr Sarah Wollaston, our MP and chairman of the Commons Health Select Committee could tell us of anywhere that a consultation over the closure of any of our hospitals changed the original proposal.
I would be interested to know where our local district councillors stand on this issue; they appear to be keeping their heads down at the moment.
In his last election flyer, Cllr Jonathan Hawkins said: “We must ensure councils cut costs.” I do not think bailing out WDBC is going to cut our costs.
With regard to Cllr Mike Saltern’s comments, it is obvious where he stands on this matter. Has he been sent out by SHDC to reassure the South Hams constituents?
“An increase of only £11 per annum”? I do not think so.
“If we do not join with West Devon, the DCLG would force us to.“
No councillor, when asking for my vote, said “vote for me and I will increase your council tax to pay for another bankrupt council”.
