YOUNGSTERS from a local primary school have had a successful couple of weeks in the Totnes Learning Communities Tag Rugby Competition.
First up were the Year 3 and 4s, who put on such a performance that KEVICC Sports Partnership coordinator Mr Lyndon said this was ’the best rugby he’d ever seen for this age category’.
Diptford teacher Mr Nute had been concerned that the team, made up of Year 3s with just one player from Year 4, would struggle. But he was proved wrong with some outstanding play.
Diptford recovered well from an initial defeat to South Brent A to draw against South Brent B, before beating both The Grove and Landscove by significant margins.
Diptford’s captain Seb Lethbridge was outstanding, and his team showed great team spirit to come 2nd overall. As a result they are through to the area finals due to take place at Stover this week.
The following week it was the turn of Diptford’s Year 5 and 6 side. They managed to win four out of their five matches, and racked up a total of 15 tries.
Captains Lottie and Oscar Humphreys lead by example, Lottie showing the rest of the team how to dummy, while Oscar demonstrated amazing determination by running the length of the pitch to tag an opponent.
The team came second, meaning they will join their schoolmates at Stover this week.
