The 113th Modbury Fruit and Produce show took place at the Memorial Hall on Saturday, July 29.
With an abundance of floral art entries and more than 120 entries in the children’s categories, the hall was awash with colour and bustle.
The floral art was described as “fantastic” this year with the ‘petite’ class having nine entries and some wonderful interpretations of ‘arrangements in a shell’. The class was won by Mrs Styler.
Margaret Middleton and Maureen Styler presented some beautiful arrangements with Mrs Styler winning the cup for most points and Teri Jeynes winning the special prize for the best exhibit in the floral art.
Angela Peters was again incredibly successful, winning the ‘best in show’ for her runner beans and her gladioli. And she also won the trophy for most points in the ‘cottagers’ class.
Phil Gilbury collected his trophy for most points in the open section with a very strong display despite some variable weather conditions!
The art section was a little lower on entries, however some stunning works were exhibited with Connie O’Neil taking the art palette for best exhibit for her calligraphy.
The photography was well entered again this year with many residents picking up their cameras and capturing some fantastic images. An unusual category for ‘depict a book title’ was won by Martin Hunt, whist ‘wildlife in my garden’ was won by Martin Hunt for his beautifully focused macro images of squirrels. The best exhibit trophy for his ‘just water’ black and white selection was awarded to Mr C Hearnden.
A huge thanks and congratulations to all the prize winners in the children’s categories and the wind chimes were wonderful. The cubs, organised by Jason Edwards did an incredible job with their dream catchers, which made the stage area bright and colourful.
The Marjory Cross Trophy for most points in the four to seven years age group was won by Miss L Bonell. The Children’s Cup for eight to 11 year olds was won by Dani Rossiter and the 12 to 15 year olds category was collected by Charlotte Hope, who entered a fantastic photograph of the coastline which was very well commented upon. We would really like to see some more entries in the older age groups, if you have any ideas for categories please let us know.
Teri Jeynes, committee member said: “A big thanks to Claire Hagger for rallying round the schools for more than three weeks before the show to encourage these great entries! As always, a huge thank you to Pauline Ryder and her team putting on a fantastic lunch for judges and volunteers and always providing a smile. Without vital support this show would not happen so we cannot thank you enough. A final thank you to Nathaniel and Aurora Gamblin whom were runners at this years show ensuring all the cards were collected and judges slips brought to the results desk.
Teri continued: “A further show of appreciation to our show President, Roger Pickles and his wife Helen whom kindly presented trophies and awards in the afternoon but also contributed for entry for the children’s categories meaning we had the lovely display we did.
“A very well done to Angela Peters, who’s determination and organisation ensures this show takes place year after year along with the support of her valuable committee.
“If you have a spare few hours for next year’s show please let any member of the committee know or speak Angela Peters or Pam Jeynes.”
Bernard Taylor, chair of Modbury Parish Council and winner best of shallots, said: “I always enter, it’s an important part of village life and should be something we keep going.
“It was great to see so many people there. From a parish point-of-view, we need to keep these things just as they are.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to Angie Peters and the whole committee for all their hard work.”
