NETWORK Rail has launched a full investigation after a train was derailed following a collision at Ivybridge Station last weekend.

On Saturday morning, while the line was closed to passenger trains for routine engineering work, two trains collided at low speed causing the partial derailment of one.

No one was injured, although some damage was done to the track. Over the weekend, the derailed train was put back on track using a train, and services during the busy Monday morning rush hour were unaffected as a result.

Speaking on Monday morning, a Network Rail spokesperson said: ‘On Saturday, February 27 an engineering train travelling at low speed collided with another engineering train at Ivybridge, causing the front of one of the trains and two wagons to come off the track. This also caused some damage to the affected section of railway line.

‘The line was closed to passenger trains at the time for maintenance work and no one was injured as a result of this incident.

‘The front of the train and the two wagons have been recovered and the damaged section of line repaired ahead of peak services this morning.

‘As safety is our highest priority a full investigation has started into how this incident happened.’
