A couple appointed leaders of a town church have said they are excited to get to work in their new home.

Lieutenants Ian and Ruth Hammond are the new leaders of The Salvation Army church in Ivybridge. Originally from Rayleigh in Essex, they have moved to Devon with their children Mia and Blake.

The Ivybridge post is Ian and Ruth’s first in full time ministry, and is a major change from their backgrounds in human resources and teaching. The couple said they feel privileged to become part of such a great church, and look forward to being able to reach out and support the community in Ivybridge.

Ian and Ruth said: “We are really excited to be here in Ivybridge. The Salvation Army is an international Christian Church and charity dedicated to caring for people who are vulnerable or in need in every community; The Salvation Army in Ivybridge is no different.

“We are here when you need us, offering compassionate support and practical help.”

So far, the couple are enjoying making the adjustment from living in London, their home for the last two years while training to be ministers. They are really looking forward to exploring the Devon countryside.

The church is involved in many community activities, including: Little Fishies parent and toddlers group every Wednesday and Friday morning, restarting September 6 after the summer; weekly Bible study on Tuesday; and prayer meeting on Thursday evenings. Members of the church also support the Ivybridge Youth For Christ Bridge Programme on Friday evenings near the skate park, and the street pastors every Friday evening.

The church meets for worship on Sunday morning at 10.30am in the youth centre.
