The RNLI has warned beach-goers and surfers to take extra care over half term with large swells predicted this week.
Steve Instance, of the RNLI South West, confirmed conditions are set to be “extremely dangerous” across Devon with strong rip currents and tidal surges predicted from Wednesday, October 28.
He called for anyone planning on entering the water to only do so on beaches where there are lifeguards, and to listen to their advice.
Steve added: “Do not enter the water if the red flag is flying, it only takes seconds to get caught out in conditions like these.
“While we expect stormy conditions during the winter, this particular swell is hitting in the middle of half term when the coastal area is busy with visitors.
“We would advice anglers, coastal walkers and anyone hoping to watch the surf to do so at a safe distance from the water.”
Lifeguards will be patrolling Bantham Beach from 10am to 5pm.
If you see anyone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
