THE jubilee crossing in South Brent is continuing to be a contentious issue, with some councillors exasperated at what they feel to be inaction and indifference from Devon Highways.

Arguably, the crossing has created more problems than it has resolved, with some lorry drivers and residents parking across the dropped kerb and ignoring the crossing.

Peak times can descend into chaos, with residents parking in the loading bay on Station Road, and lorries being left with no choice but to park across the crossing.

Cllr Glyn Richards, chairman of the parish council’s planning and finance committee, said: ‘Residents of South Brent feel ignored by Devon Highways. We’ve been trying to get a proper crossing put in for years.’

Cllr, Cathie Pannell, vice chairman of the parish council, said: ‘I don’t see why we can’t get something right for our village.

‘The crossing isn’t marked properly and the grey colour blends into the road, particularly when it is wet. The parish council has tried for years to get something better there, something safe – with a different colour that warns people.’

The current crossing was installed in 2012 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s golden jubilee.

It was installed at the location of a granite monument commemorating Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee in 1897 – now to be found in Wellington Square in the village.

The pavement was widened, the kerbs were dropped, bollards installed and a sandy grey surface was painted between the post office and the paper shop.
