Kingsbridge Town Bowling Club

Town finally played Devon Presidents on Tuesday week. This match was supposed to be played in the club’s centenary last year, but it had to be postponed due to the untimely death of Bowls Devon’s 2017 lady president Ruth Voysey.

Town were honoured to host this ­season’s presidents Mike Birch and Vicky Hingston and last season’s president Colin Healey. Colin gave a speech about how Ruth had been looking forward to the match, but it was not to be.

He ­presented the club with a certificate ­commemorating the centenary, which the club will treasure.

The result of the match did not really matter as it was quite a poignant occasion, but the presidents brought a strong team and won by 48-66.

Results: Sue Allen, Geoff Bulbulian and Keith Baston won 21-8; Marion Thorne, Keith Brayne and Tim Lewis won 15-13. Geoff Langridge, Steve Ellis and Eric Fitch lost 9-24; Sandra Brayne, Ray Lancaster and David Thorne lost 3-21.

Last Friday, Town played host to Kingsbridge Park in the second leg of the cup competition between the sides. Park had won the home leg by 16 shots, so Town needed to win by 17 shots. They nearly pulled it off winning by 12 shots for a score of 74-62 to give park a four-shot overall win, 131-135.

David Thorne’s rink led the way with a great 23-shot victory, but the other rinks could not provide the backup ­necessary to win on aggregate despite a great effort.

Results: Sandra Brayne, Roy Krywko and David Thorne won 30-7; Jim Balsdon, Sue Allen and Eric Fitch won 20-14; Julie Hadley, Keith Brayne, and Keith Baston lost 13-17. Steve Ellis, Marion Thorne and Colin Baker lost 11-24.

On Saturday, Town held their annual barbecue in tremendous weather.

The event was organised by Sue Allen and Marion Thorne, but it was really a team effort, as all members contributed to the cause. A target bowling game was won by Keith Brayne and a raffle was organised. The event raised a profit in excess of £250 for club funds.
