Devon Senior Cup
Plymouth 77 all out,
Cornwood 73 all out;
Plymouth win
the Devon Senior Cup by four runs
After the highs and lows of last weekend, Cornwood are now focused on a ‘winner takes all’ shoot-out at Oak Park on Saturday against current A Division leaders and fellow promotion winners Brixham CC.
Only five points separate the teams, who are both expected to approach the game with little inhibition, in the comfort of knowing that whatever happens both teams are already up into the Premier Division for next season.
Cornwood make one change, with second XI skipper James Horgan returning to his second XI captaincy duties for the last game.
The seconds have had their best-ever finish in the 2nd XI premier division, with fourth place at stake should they get a win at Plymouth CC.
In Horgan’s place returns Craig Harris, who missed last Saturday’s win at Bradninch due to personal reasons. Chris Parker continues as wicketkeeper as Mark Horwell is away on holiday.
Last Saturday’s convincing win against Bradninch in a reduced overs match earned the Corns 19 points, which sealed the second promotion place and would have led to great celebrations if it hadn’t been the Devon Cup final the following day.
The Cornwood travelling army of approximately 130 supporters descended on Heathcoat CC for a match reduced to 25 overs (due to early rain) against local rivals Plymouth CC.
The supporters had a lot to cheer about when Plymouth were reduced to 77 all out, on a difficult batting track, after an impressive bowling and fiedling performance, with Kiwi Craig James returning best figures of 4-12 from his five overs.
However, no one bargained for a similar Cornwood collapse which saw them finish four runs short, much to the disappointment of the players and supporters alike.
Skipper Jason Hall is confident the the players will be able to pick themselves up for the league title showdown on Saturday and wants to see the team make amends for the disappointment in the Devon Senior Cup final and give their loyal supporters something to cheer about.
Celebrations for the immediate bounce back to the premier division have been put on ice until after the Brixham game.
Cornwood CC then hosts popular local 10 piece funk, soul and disco band Joey the Lips on Sunday, August 30, with a night of live music starting from 7pm with support act The Chay Snowden Band getting proceedings under way.
It promises to be a great end to the season, with two bars, a Pimm’s tent, hog roast and burgers available throughout the night. Any requests for tickets can be made to Wendy Warren on 07709 029579.
